Tim McLeod, Serenity and Sonia Hammrich at Sierra Tucson’s 24th Annual Alumni Retreat

Tucson, AZ (PRWEB) November 10, 2011

Sierra Tucson’s 24th Annual Alumni Retreat (S.T.A.R. 24) was all about celebrating the miracles of recovery and creating new miracles for children who are hurting. Over 150 Sierra Tucson alumni gathered the weekend of November 3-6, 2011, to reconnect and renew their passion for recovery and self-care. Alumni in attendance represented a wide range of years, from the ’80s and ’90s through 2011.

This year’s retreat theme was “Carrying the Message.” Alumni were encouraged to think about “how we carry the message of hope and love to the world” and were given an unexpected chance to do so. Behind the scenes, Senior Alumni Coordinator Tim McLeod had planned an exercise into the retreat where alumni worked together in teams with an unknown outcome.

On Friday afternoon, the alumni gathered on a sunny, grassy field at the Westward Look Resort and found 25 stations stocked with bicycle parts and tools. Splitting into teams, the alumni collaborated to assemble the bikes, calling on assistance from their own “Bicycle Inspection Team,” as needed.

When the bikes were almost complete, a large group of children surprised the alumni as they swarmed the field to claim the bikes that they were excited to receive.

The children were brought by Tu Nidito Children and Family Services, an organization that provides comfort, hope, and support for children and families whose lives have been impacted by a serious medical condition or death. Tu Nidito, which means “your little nest,” gives emotional, social, and educational tools to children and families and empowers them with strength and skills for the future.

Tim McLeod became connected to Tu Nidito through Sonia Hammrich, Sales Manager for Westward Look Resort, where the Alumni Retreat was held.

“Shortly after the shootings on January 8, 2011, had impacted my 9-year-old daughter, Serenity, Tim came to us for help in planning the annual Alumni Retreat.” explained Sonia. “Serenity was best friends with Christina Taylor Green. We had found rich support for Serenity at Tu Nidito, so when Tim asked about a group of children to help, I immediately thought of the wonderful children who are supported through Tu Nidito.”

While the bikes were being built, the children ate lunch at the Westward Look Resort. The surprised alumni warmly welcomed the children and were overjoyed with the opportunity to give bicycles and helmets to them. One alumni commented, “I really enjoyed that activity and the cause… I was touched by who the bikes were going to.”

Serenity and her mother, Sonia, joined Tim on the field to express their own appreciation and thanks from the children at Tu Nidito. “Serenity wanted to be there to thank the people,” said Sonia. “This has all been part of the healing process for her.”

“It didn’t matter if you were young or old,” Tim McLeod affirmed, “lives were touched. Everyone gained something from this. One alumnus was able to teach a child to ride his bike. Two children are happy to be able to participate in the Junior El Tour de Tucson next weekend because they now have bikes. One child and alumnus found mutual encouragement when they discovered a shared loss of losing of a family member to cancer.”

“When we step aside and work together with other people, taking the time to give back and connect, we can make a difference and help others who are hurting,” continued Tim. “That does more for us spiritually and emotionally than anything money can buy. Everyone walked away full of gratitude to be a part of the event.”

Veg Up E-book Takes Action on Healthy Eating Habits

Veg Up E-book Takes Action on Healthy Eating Habits

Veg Up E-book

Canberra, Australia (PRWEB) November 01, 2011

GrowingRaw.com, a website that shares how to grow and eat healthy food, announces the release of Veg Up, a healthy eating workbook. Unlike prescriptive diet plans, Veg Up provides guidance from day to day so that readers can learn how to build healthy eating habits into their daily routine.

Most people know that eating vegetables is a good thing, and will help them feel and stay healthy. Yet although the repeated health messages about eating more vegetables are certainly getting through, many people still struggle to fulfil the basic dietary requirements. So what’s stopping people from eating enough vegetables?

Healthy eating guidelines recommend that people eat at least 5 servings (2 ½ cups) of vegetables each day. Yet according to surveys by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 74% of Americans eat less than 3 servings of vegetables a day. The story is similar in Australia, where the last National Nutrition Survey found that only 15.4% of men and 22% of women eat 4 or more vegetable servings each day.

In many cases, people don’t know how to plan and prepare healthy meals based on vegetables. Others cite taste as a reason not to eat vegetables, but they are unfamiliar with techniques and recipes that will produce delicious vegetable dishes. Many are simply in the habit of grabbing convenience foods at the last minute, choosing to save time rather than their health.

“We’re excited to provide people with a healthy eating resource that will finally help them achieve their health goals, lose weight naturally and boost their energy levels,” explains Trina Cleary, author of Veg Up. “It can be very difficult to stay motivated long enough to build good intentions into healthy eating habits that will endure. That’s where the Veg Up workbook really helps people keep on track with simple and easy to follow instructions and recipes.”

Not only is Veg Up a motivational resource, it provides a month long plan that guides people through the process of building healthy eating habits that will last a lifetime. The workbook provides a roadmap that empowers people through goal-setting, self-assessment, affirmation and reflection. People are able to check off daily tasks and recipes so they can clearly see their progress.

“Our strongest feedback is that Veg Up readers love being able to let go of their guilt about unhealthy eating patterns. They’re just so relieved to have discovered ways to eat healthy food regularly, and enjoy it too!”

The Veg Up e-book is now available in PDF format online for the price of $ 17.00. For more information on Growing Raw website’s e-book, visit: http://www.growingraw.com/how-to-build-healthy-eating-habits-for-life.html

United Security Life and Health Life Insurance Offers Tips to Prevent Unhealthy Weight Gain During the Holiday Season

United Security Life and Health Life Insurance Offers Tips to Prevent Unhealthy Weight Gain During the Holiday Season

Bedford Park, IL (PRWEB) October 31, 2011

Statistics show that the average American gains one to two pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. And although that does not seem like a lot, statistics also show that most Americans do not lose that weight. (http://www.webmd.com/diet/features/holiday-foods-diet) Year after year, those extra pounds can add up and contribute to being overweight or obesity later in life. United Security Life and Health Insurance Company offer an easy to follow guide to help avoid holiday weight gain this year.

“With the already hectic schedules most Americans have, and then adding-in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, along with festive parties, healthy eating and exercise are usually the first things to go. The result unfortunately is unwanted and unhealthy extra pounds by the start of the New Year,” explained Leonard Hertko, M.D., Medical Advisor, United Security Life and Health. “No one wants to be on a strict diet over the holidays. We all want to enjoy the abundance of traditional favorite foods. This can be achieved with a little planning and keeping-in-mind a few healthy tips.”

Dr. Hertko offers the following tips this holiday season:

1.     Never go to a party hungry. It is important not to skip meals or go to a festive function on an empty stomach. If you do, you are more likely to overeat and consume extra calories.

2.    Watch your alcohol consumption. In addition to the dangers of consuming too much alcohol, drinks are loaded with empty calories that can add-up fast. Alcohol can expand your appetite since it causes an increase in the acid level in your stomach, which in turn makes you feel hungrier.

3.    Stay active. People who are more active during the holidays do not gain weight. It is important to squeeze at least 15 extra minutes of exercise into your day. This can easily be achieved by taking the stairs at work instead of the elevator, taking the dog for a walk, or doing something active with your children. The point is, you want to balance your exercise level with your calorie consumption. By doing this, you will not gain that extra holiday weight.

4.    Keep your portions small. When going through the buffet line, do not load-up your plate with giant size portions. Smaller sized samples of your favorite foods will keep you satisfied and will help avoid that overstuffed, uncomfortable feeling.

5.    Make smart choices. To shave calories, go easy on the nuts, cheeses, cream sauces, gravy, butter, and whipped cream. All of these foods are high in fat and will quickly increase your calorie intake. Add more fruits and vegetables to your diet, both offer less calories and are healthier for you. Enjoy just one of your favorite desserts, and stay away from eating handfuls of cookies and other small desserts which you are more likely to over eat on.

Dr. Hertko concluded, “If you keep these helpful tips in mind, when you attend your next holiday gathering you will be armed with the tools needed to manage your calorie intake and avoid those extra holiday pounds. Obesity can lead to potentially serious health problems including heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. In addition, being obese can affect a person’s overall quality of life which can lead to depression.”

Star Trac and Schwinn Released Their New Models of Spinning

Star Trac and Schwinn Released Their New Models of Spinning® Bikes and Indoor Cycles and Discount Online Fitness, a National Dealer, is the Best Place to Buy One

Arlington, Texas (PRWEB) October 31, 2011

Star Trac and Schwinn released their new models of Spinning® bikes and indoor cycles and Discount Online Fitness, a national dealer of new, refurbished and used fitness equipment, is the best place to buy them. Discount Online Fitness also offers other new, refurbished and used commercial grade fitness equipment at discounted prices bringing gym quality products to everyone. Anyone in the market for a treadmill, elliptical, upright bike, recumbent bike, spin bike, stair stepper, cross trainer, strength equipment, free weights or any other type of gym equipment, should visit this online store.

Think back to being a child and riding a bike for the first time. It was somewhat like rite of passage, right? Some individuals never lose the desire for cycling and it becomes a true passion. Many individuals have taken this passion and desire indoors and continue to train on indoor cycles. This type of fitness equipment is very popular with cycling enthusiast as well as people who are seeking a low-impact workout for the lower body that also has cardiovascular benefits.

The indoor cycle craze, or Spinning® as it is most widely known, began in the 1980’s in Southern California when bike racer Johnny Goldberg opened the first spinning center. Spinning® refers to indoor, group stationary cycling, usually led by a certified instructor. During the class an instructor simulates a ride. Together, riders travel on flat roads, climb hills, sprint and race. Spinning® bike riders are kept motivated by the instructor, the people around them and by the music. It is a non-impact workout for people of all ages and fitness levels. It has gained huge popularity in the last 5-10 years. Spinning® is popular for many reasons but one of the main reasons is that it enhances cardiovascular fitness and improves muscle tone. Spinning® works various muscle groups, including the quadriceps, hamstrings, calves, hips and abdominal muscles. Research has shown that an average 40-minute spinning workout will burn about 500 calories.

The spinning bike is a specially designed stationary bicycle that is designed to mimic an outdoor bicycle ride. The bike has fixed gear-racing handlebars, pedals equipped with clips or cages and an adjustable bike seat. The intensity of your workout can be adjusted by manipulating the resistance knob, which is located on each spinning bicycle.

Most Spinning® enthusiast believe if you are going to be involved in indoor cycling, it is best to have a high quality Spinning® bike like the Star Trac Spinner NXT or Schwinn AC Performance indoor cycle. Star Trac, one of the top selling Spinner® Bike manufacturers in the industry, features 4 Spinner bikes. The Star Trac Spinner® NXT is the top model featuring a heavy duty frame and micro-adjustable handle bars that slide up, down, forward, and back to accommodate any size rider. In its very functional style, the Star Trac Spinner® NXT is constructed with several components for safety measures; this includes its two-sided SPD-friendly platform pedals. What this means is you can fit either clip-free or standard trainers rendering the ride very customisable. There’s no risk of injury from a foot slipping off a pedal. Since the saddle of this spinning bike has a forward-thinking ergonomic style along with dual-density padding, it is remarkably relaxing and can be altered with ease as well. Thus, you don’t have to be concerned with saddle sores or chafing, even if you spin for two hours at a time. Road cyclists will appreciate the way the NXT can be set up to mimic the exact set-up of their road bikes. What this means is a lot of conditioning efficiency and stability, for the reason that it permits cyclists to harmonise the motions of their bodies in inside and outside environments.

The Spinner Elite features a safety feature called “smart-release brake system” that stops the flywheel quickly if needed. The Spinner Elite has a pin-select adjustable seat slider with handle bars that adjust up and down. The Spinner Pro does not have the “smart release brake system” for more experienced riders who don’t need extra safety features. All 3 Star Trac Spin bikes have dual water bottle holders built into the handle bars. Discount Online Fitness’s spin bike expert Steve said in his opinion, “I like the NXT because it has a very heavy duty frame and can withstand multiple indoor cycle classes daily with no signs of wear and tear and is considered an industry standard in Spin Bikes.” All of the Star Trac Spinner bikes have dual sided pedals with toe cages and SPD compatible clips. Star Trac also features a Spinner bike called the Star Trac eSpinner. The eSpinner Spin Bike has a touch-screen HDTV display which shows a virtual spin class which takes you through many different cycle courses, and an iPod can be connected to playback video for entertainment, or the built-in TV tuner may be used.

Schwinn features 2 indoor cycles. The Schwinn AC Sport features a steel frame body with handle bars and seats that adjust up, down, forward, and back using a 4 position system that adjusts to accommodate any size rider. Schwinn choose a more modern white frame color instead of the traditional silver frame Star Trac features. What makes the AC indoor cycles unique is the magnetic resistance. Magnetic resistance is a system that is virtually indestructible and requires no maintenance. Some riders say magnetic resistance feels more like a road bike compared to traditional resistance system which use a leather or wool pad. Since the magnets do not physically touch the flywheel there is no parts that wear out and need replacing. The Schwinn AC indoor cycles magnetic system allows the ability to install a Mpower Performance console that calculates Power/Watts, cadence, hear rate, distance, and time. The Schwinn AC Performance is Schwinn’s top of the line model featuring an all aluminum frame. Steve with Discount Online Fitness stated that is his expert opinion, “the magnetic system on the Schwinn AC bikes feels very realistic as if I’m riding a road bike. I like seeing Power/Watts feedback so I can see how much I’ve improved between rides.”

The President of Discount Online Fitness stated that, “Schwinn Indoor Cycles and Star Trac’s Spinning Bikes are some of our best sellers. We have a constant demand for these bikes from both gym owners and from individuals wanting to work out at home.” Discount Online Fitness is a national dealer of new, refurbished and used fitness equipment. It sells all types of exercise equipment including treadmills, elliptical machines, upright bikes, recumbent bikes, spin bikes (indoor cycles), stair steppers, cross trainers, strength equipment, free weights and much, much more.

Hypothyroidism Author and Weight Loss Expert Sanford Siegal, D.O., M.D., Applauds New Focus on Obesity-Causing Thyroid Problems

Hypothyroidism Author and Weight Loss Expert Sanford Siegal, D.O., M.D., Applauds New Focus on Obesity-Causing Thyroid Problems

Miami, FL (PRWEB) October 19, 2007

Renowned weight loss doctor and author Sanford Siegal, D.O., M.D., best known as the creator of the popular Dr. Siegal’s COOKIE DIET™ weight loss system, applauds the sudden renewed interest in hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism is an often undiagnosed disease that slows metabolism and causes a host of cruel symptoms including depression, dry skin, infertility and, most notably, obesity. In his most recent book, Is Your Thyroid Making You Fat? (Warner Books, 2000), Dr. Siegal takes issue with his fellow physicians who he says rely too heavily on questionable laboratory tests and ignore the obvious signs of a metabolic problem in their overweight patients.

“I’ve treated more than a half million overweight patients during the past fifty years. I’ve ordered thousands of thyroid lab tests and I can tell you they are highly unreliable,” said Dr. Siegal. “I’ve ordered the same test on the same person several days in a row and gotten widely conflicting results.”

During an appearance on ABC’s Good Morning America in 2003, Dr. Siegal told host Charles Gibson that he estimates that one out of four overweight patients come to him with a thyroid problem that has gone undiagnosed by their family physicians.

“We have to handle those patients differently,” Dr. Siegal told host Charles Gibson. “We diagnose the problem and treat it.”

Dr. Siegal has developed his own self-test for determining hypothyroidism which he claims is more accurate than conventional tests. The test, which appears in his book, involves evaluating the patient’s weight loss while on a fixed calorie diet and comparing that result with the expected standard.

According to Dr. Siegal, many overweight people truthfully tell their family doctors that they don’t overeat and yet can’t lose weight even on a low calorie diet. Often doctors don’t believe their patients and accuse them of overeating.

“I’ve received thousands of emails and letters from readers who said that they felt vindicated when they read the book,” added Dr. Siegal. “For years, they’d been told that their obesity, depression, and other medical problems were caused by their lack of willpower when, in fact, the culprit was a sluggish metabolism.”

In addition to his concern about the methods some of his colleagues use to diagnose hypothyroidism, Dr. Siegal is equally critical of the most commonly prescribed medication for treating the problem, levothyroxine. According to Dr. Siegal, this synthetic form of thyroid hormone is less effective than the natural form known as Armour thyroid or Thyroid USP.

“The tragic thing about undiagnosed hypothyroidism and the devastating effects it has on millions of lives is that it is generally easy to treat with natural thyroid hormone, an inexpensive, well-tolerated medication,” added Dr. Siegal.

To lose 20 lbs this summer you have to do a few simple things:
-eat less junk food (ice cream, cookies, cake, sugary cereal..etc)
-do AT LEAST 30 minutes of excercise a day every day (you can always take one day off)
**swimming, treading water, biking, walking…..make sure to get a variety of excercises
-stay positive and don’t always stare at your body, but i have heard that if you weigh yourself on the scale more often that will make you want to lose more weight!
-lastly- DO NOT do anything that could harm your body-like skipping meals, or excercising for long amounts of time

Does Running Help Lose Weight-How to Lose Weight Running and Lose lbs Naturally

There are basically two types of running that you can do and they are indoor and outdoor. You can lose weight running using either of these but they both have their stories to tell.

Firstly outdoors running is either on grass which is better for your legs and feet and less likely to cause injury or road running which if you haven’t got the correct footwear can cause injury, Either one can be cold and lonely and if you are like me they are just plain boring and result in loss of interest in some people.

Running indoors on the other hand is both warmer and more pleasant and you can talk to others as you are running. You can either run at home on a treadmill or at the local gym or health centre and the main plus of this is that most of the modern treadmills are cushioned to prevent the constant load being placed on the legs and feet by running on a hard surface. If you have ever run on a treadmill and then run on the road outdoors you will know exactly what I mean.

Another plus to the treadmill is that if it is in your gym or health centre there are trained professionals there to guide you on what you need to be doing in order to lose weight running. By exerting yourself like this doing cardiovascular exercise you will sweat and sweat a lot, this is the body detoxifying itself and by drinking more fresh water you are in fact flushing out the impurities in the body and helping it.

The act of physical exercise will also have the effect of increasing the oxygen level in your body including the rain and other organs which will make you more alert throughout the day and you will feel like you have so much energy too. This is because the metabolism has increased in your body and that is the speed at which the body uses energy produced from food, and this increase in the metabolism is what will help you lose lbs of body weight over the weeks and results in healthy fat loss which is what you need.

You must however undertake regular exercise for this to be any good to your body and if you do want to lose weight running then you must make the time to regularly exercise in this way even 20 or so minutes a day is good for you in the long term. Today’s lifestyle is fast paced and doesn’t really set time aside for exercising but if managed right there is always time somewhere to put in some time for running.

The overall health benefits of losing lbs of your body weight are so overwhelming in the form of heart disease and obesity that you simply cannot ignore it and regular cardiovascular exercising like running will help you lose weight as well as be less likely to suffer from obesity and heart problems, not necessarily now but when you reach an older age, all those years of bad health and neglect will show through in other health related ways.

There are obviously lots of other ways to lose lbs but if you are considering the question does running lose weight then the answer is emphatically yes and it does a whole lot more too.
