If you are breastfeeding, you might want to know if you can safely diet. Knowing that baby gets all his nutrition from the mother, it is only natural to think that dieting will hinder a baby&#8217;s growth and development. Fortunately, it is possible to lose weight while breastfeeding.</p>
<p>Mothers who breastfeed will be happy to know that breastfeeding actually helps you shed pounds. In fact, pregnancy fat is nature&#8217;s way of preparing the body for lactation. With breastfeeding, the fat is burned to produce breast milk. This helps you regain your pre-pregnancy weight more quickly.</p>
<p>If you want to start a diet program, it is best to wait at least two months to make sure that milk production is firmly established. Your body has to produce enough milk that the baby needs during the first 8 weeks. In addition, waiting two months will give your body sufficient time to recover from the stress of having a baby.</p>
<p>Doctors recommend that you take in 200-500 calories more than what you normally need to maintain your weight while you are nursing. Your body uses up body fat while you are nursing. That makes it easier to lose the fat on your hips and thighs. Mothers who breastfeed lose weight faster than mothers who bottle feed their baby.</p>
<p>Avoid quick-fix diets while breastfeeding, such as liquid diets, low carbohydrate diets, or weight-loss medication. They are not good for you or the baby. Breastfeeding mothers need a healthy diet of whole grains, protein, fruits and vegetables.</p>
<p>If you want to lose weight while breastfeeding, limit it to one or two pounds per week. Drastic weight loss can affect your milk supply. Besides, it is best to shed extra weight gradually. Remember that you gained weight over a period of nine months. Expect to take 9 to 12 months to lose the excess fat.</p>
<p>Moderate exercise while breastfeeding can also help you lose weight. Exercise will help tone and build your muscles and fight postpartum depression. Most medical experts recommend that a vigorous exercise regimen should not start until six weeks after childbirth, at the very least. This should give your body enough time to heal.</p>
<p>Breastfeeding is good not only for the baby but also for you. If you want to lose weight while breastfeeding, all you have to do is eat the right kinds of food and follow an exercise program that will ensure an adequate milk supply for your baby.</p>

I know that as long as you eat properly during pregnancy, that most of the weight comes off a few weeks after pregnancy, but let&#8217;s face it, some of us retain weight more heavily than others.</p>
<p>Is losing the baby weight more difficult than losing weight at any other time or is it just like losing weight?</p>
<p>BQ: If it&#8217;s harder, why?</p>

<p><i>Answer by Mommy of 2</i><br/>It&#8217;s harder. Because you have a baby to look after you may not always have time or energy to work out and/or eat right. You are not getting enough sleep and sleep is important to losing weight.</p>

To this day, heart disease is still a leading cause of death among men and women in the U.S. It has been well documented that one of the leading risk factors for heart disease is being overweight.</p>
<p>Type 2 diabetes is another major health risk caused by being overweight. A poor diet and minimal physical activity contribute to Type 2 diabetes being diagnosed usually later in life. However, more recently the incidence of this type of diabetes has been on the upswing among our youth for the same reason of over eating and under exercising.</p>
<p>It is not as well known but the incidence of arthritis also rises with overweight individuals. The prevailing theory is that excess weight puts undue strain on joint and muscles which can lead to arthritis.</p>
<p>#2 Part of being lean and mean is that when you are lean you have more energy. Its not just the external factor of less weight means less energy to move the body so you are quicker and faster. There are also things going on inside the body and the body&#8217;s processes. Specifically, excess weight has a great impact on your metabolism. In severe cases, this leads to energy depletion and the feeling that you cannot make it through the day. When your are physically tired all the time it is hard to focus and concentrate, our brain does not function as well as it could. Frequently sluggishness and fatigue lead to a very unattractive lifestyle that is constantly spiraling downward. No energy to do anything so less is done, more weight gained means more energy loss and so on and so on. Good weight loss programs work to break this cycle by boosting your metabolism and providing you with much needed energy.</p>
<p>#3 Being lean and mean leads you to feeling good about yourself. Self esteem is a big reason to lose weight. For some, its just the pride of looking in the mirror and liking what they see.
